If you extrapolate that across all of the UK, that would be roughly 210,000 people. That would be about 1/300th of the population. So I think it would be fair to say that there are at least 1000 people in my local area with some interest in wargaming. The local GW has about 800 likes on their facebook page. The biggest local club near me has around 500 members on their fb page, in a city of ~300,000. How do you define a player? Is it someone who has played in the last year? Anyone who owns miniatures? Anyone who's ever played a tabletop game? It's like asking how many pool players are there in the UK.
